Energy and grit, with a sweet tooth for harmonies. A lyric armor and vocal sincerity that triumphs over tough topics as depression and separation.

Exercise the Spirit revisits the colorful songwriting of early RS (circa You & Me & Hell, 1995). These 5 songs tout a continued love for surprising melodies and rhythms, and vocals sung full-voice, or cautiously and up close. Mostly uptempo, these introspective songs push back against the dark forces of insecurity, depression, and separation. "Run to Hide" and "Lazy Bones" are direct conversations with the self-saboteur. Landmine is a love song to a dear one battling an impenetrable lowness. "Ageless Pill (Called Playing)" and "Exercise the Spirit" call out the crazy speed of life and the need to lean on more than humanness to be kind. "Exercise the Spirit" closes with the belief that in the end, the Spirit can transport us, transform us, if given the invitation.

LYRICS

1. Run to Hide

I see you coming and I run to hide.

Like a big wheel burning right between my eyes. It aint true, I am not you.

You're not listening to a thing I say. And you're gonna tell it to me anyway.

If habit has it's own way.   What I'd give for a quiet day.

Would you ever think to love me?    Take a better picture of me?

But it's not true, I am not you.

You keep tracking all the ways I fail.  Well I'm done running back into that cell.

All my shades are up for good.

Now who runs the neighborhood?

Would you ever think to love me?  Take a better picture of me?

But it's not true, I am not you.

Would you ever think to love me?   Take a better picture of me?

Would you ever stand beside me? Get to know protect and guide me?

But it's not true, I am not you.  Ahhhh

2. Lazy Bones

Lazy bones, you piss me off.  You keep me from the things I dream of.

Test my head and lay the tacks.  Try to poison all my limbs with all my lacks.

Wonder what good seed is growing.

Wonder when we'll get to knowing.

What I see when you walk in – a cloud of smoldering flies round your grin.

What I know when I stand up – I always feel much better.

Wonder what good breeze is blowing.

Wonder when we'll get to knowing.

Lazy bones, I cannot stand, the lies you feed my mind at my command.

Wonder what good seed is growing.

Wonder when we'll get to knowing.

You come inside and march around.  You like to think you own this town but,

You forget, I see you now – it's my mind.

And everytime you put me down, I peel my head up off the ground.

And now I know the lie is old – it's my mind.

And when at last you've given up, because I've drowned you in my cup,

I feel the lift, your time is up, it's my mind.

I'm taking back, I'm taking back, I'm taking back my mind.

Wonder what good breeze is growing.

Wonder when we'll get to knowing.

Wonder what good seed is growing.

Wonder when we'll get to

3.  Landmine

Funny feeling, to feel nothing. Know that you're real, but to feel you must steal.

You remember you once wanted her. Now you just know that the want has let go.

Oh my, it feels like living on a landmine

And all this time, you step so lightly so you can survive.

It's a slow seed.

It comes down heavy.  Comes down lately.  All in a day you could be washed away.

Honey, meanwhile, through you sad smile, try to say good,

Cause you think that you should.

Oh my, it feels like living on a landmine

And all this time, you're walking lightly so you can survive.

It's a slow seed.

Honey don't believe the things they're tellingn you

Walk on by the crowd of monsters waving

Try to trust the seed God plants inside of you.

Oh my, it feels like living on a landmine

And all this time, you're walking lightly so you can survive.

And all right, your hands are shaking and your hearts on fire.

By sunrise, we'll still be watching for your open eyes.

Cause it's a slow seed.

4. Ageless Pill

I just want to go outside and play, and run around the world until I finally feel again.

Such a hurried life, I won't obey.

I'd leave behind this busy mind for a foolish day, oh any time to play.

Always lots of stuff to do.  All important, never through.

And I would rather amok with you.

I just want to crawl inside and play, and surf around my mind until I finally dream again.

Time is marching into our dismay.

Let's lay and listen to the clouds hearing what they say.   We all need time to play.

(Cars and cash and dividends.)  All this useless stuff we do.

(Houses, screens and medicines).  All important, never through.

(All these things don't add up to).  And all I need, the ageless pill called playing.

(Cars and cash and dividends)  All this useless stuff we do,

(Houses, screens and medicines) all important.

(Cars and cash and dividends)  All this useless stuff to do,

(Houses, screens and medicines)  not important.

(Cars and cash and dividends)  All this useless stuff to do,

(Houses, screens and medicines)  so important, never through.

(All these things don't add up to) the ageless pill called playing.

5. Exercise the Spirit

Leaving in the morning. Dressed before the sun brings, taxi man, to Japan.

Hinges on the drawer creaks.  Try to fake a deep sleep.

Don't wanna know or watch you go.

Coffee milk steaming, time to break the dreaming.

Hearts not done, not yet one.

I feel you lean to kiss me.

I attach a secret string longer than any plane can fly.

I don't know how, I can't say where

Someone please tell me cause I'm in mid-air

I feel much better doubting disbelief than with game face on (when the doubting's done)

I want you for my wallet, pull you out at any moment to verify you're still alive

I'm leaning on the spirit, why don't we exercise it?  And why can't I feel heaven now?

I don't know how, I can't say where

Someone please tell me cause I'm in mid-air

I still feel better doubting disbelief than with game face on.

Don't stay long, and I will be fine, if in between, we exercise.

You don't stay long and I will be fine, if in between we exercise.
